Adacolumn® is a medical device for the treatment of active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It is a quick and straightforward treatment with selective adsorption of leukocytes (selectively granulocytes and monocytes/macrophages) from the blood. It aims to decrease inflammation and relieve patients’ symptoms.
- Granulocyte levels in patients with active ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are usually twice the normal levels.
- Active ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are associated with extravasation of large numbers of granulocytes and monocytes/macrophages into mucosal tissue.
- Treatment comprises of a one-hour procedure once a week for five weeks.
- The Adacolumn® system does not require a cell separator, so can easily be performed in an outpatient setting.
- The Adacolumn® procedure requires only two ordinary venipunctures; neither an AV shunt nor femoral vein puncture is necessary.
